Frequently Asked Questions

Alliant

What is a credit union?

A credit union, like Alliant, is a not-for-profit financial cooperative, which means that every member is also part-owner! Being an owner is just one of the important benefits of banking with a credit union versus a traditional bank.

Is Alliant a bank?

Alliant is better than a bank. We're a credit union that's owned by our members, so we look out for your best interests. Every dollar you invest in Alliant is reinvested in you!

Co-Borrower

What is a co-borrower?

A co-borrower is a person whose name is added to a loan application and whose income and credit history are considered along with the primary applicant's in determining creditworthiness.

How do I add a co-borrower to my loan application?

You will have the option to add a co-borrower within your loan application. The Alliant Loan Application will ask you to provide general information, including contact information, for the co-borrower so that the loan application can be completed.

What if I don't have my co-borrower's social security number?

Click "Exit & Resume Later". Once you have obtained your co-borrower's social security number, log back in to the Alliant Loan Application using your PIN and complete your loan application.

Funds Disbursement

What's the difference between a wire transfer and an electronic transfer?

Both are ways of transferring money electronically, but the speed and cost for the methods differ: A wire transfer is faster, but you pay a fee for the faster transfer.

A wire transfer is when you transfer money electronically from one financial institution to another for a service fee. Wired money typically transfers in less than 24 hours, but the timing can vary between financial institutions because of differing transfer policies and procedures.

A electronic transfer, such as the service provided for free by Alliant, is a no-cost method of transferring money between Alliant accounts or between your Alliant account and your account at another financial institution. When making an electronic transfer between financial institutions, it is processed through the Automated Clearing House (ACH). These are often referred to as ACH transfers. The transferred funds typically are available within three business days of the deposit. Note: Other financial institutions may charge a fee for outbound transfers.

Can I use wire transfers?

Alliant can help you quickly send loan funds via wire transfer with just a few simple steps. To get started, complete our Wire Transfer Authorization Form and fax it to (773) 462-2095 along with a copy of your government-issued photo I.D., such as a driver's license or passport. After you've faxed the form, please call us at 800-328-1935 to verify your security information.

Outgoing wire transfer timing notes:

  • Domestic wire transfers are processed between Monday–Friday, 7:30am–3:00pm CT
  • Foreign wire transfers are processed between Monday–Friday, 8:30am–12:30pm CT
  • Wire transfers requested after the processing hours or on the weekend will be processed on the next business day
  • We cannot guarantee that the loan funds will be posted by the receiving financial institution the same day of the wire transfer

A valid I.D. and phone number is required to send international and domestic wire transfers, as we may call you to verify the transfer details as an additional security measure. Incorrect or missing information may delay your wire transfer.

Important notice regarding outgoing international wire transfers
Regulations regarding international wire transfers require you to agree to certain terms in person with a signature, or orally during a recorded phone call. The service fees, currency exchange rate, amount to be received by recipient, and the date funds will be received, will now be provided to members sending international wire transfers. Alliant will communicate a guide rate for currency conversion, but the rate will not be confirmed until the transaction is processed.

Is there a cost for wire transfers?

It depends on what type of wire transfer you are making:

  • Incoming wire transfers are free to members
  • Outbound domestic wire transfers are assessed a $25 fee
  • Outbound international wire transfers are assessed a $50 fee

For a complete list of fees, visit our "Alliant fees" page.

Can I disburse loan funds to an outside financial institution?

Online Banking makes it simple to transfer funds to or from non-Alliant banks, credit unions, and other financial institutions. To get started:

  1. Visit the "Manage Transfer Accounts" page within Online Banking and select "Add New Account"
  2. Enter the outside institution's 9-digit routing number and click "Continue"
  3. Enter your related account information, review the transfer authorization agreement, and click "Submit"

After you submit the outside financial institution you would like to use for your transfer, Alliant will make a small deposit (less than $1) within 1-2 business days to verify the account. Once the deposit posts to your outside account, return to the "Manage Transfer Accounts" page to verify the amount deposited. This helps us ensure the fund information is correct and your transfer is going to the right place.

You have 15 days to verify your new accounts. Once verified, you'll be able to initiate future transfers whenever you'd like.

Why do I need to verify my account information when sending loan funds to an outside financial institution?

In short, we want to make sure you have access to the disbursed loan funds to keep you and your loan funds as safe as possible. We appreciate your patience during this short verification process.

When will my disbursed loan funds become available at the receiving financial institution?

Transfers to or from outside financial institutions submitted before 12pm CT on business days typically post on the next business day. Transfers made after 12pm, or on weekends or holidays, post on the second business day following the transfer request.

Actual posting times may vary by financial institution. For specific posting timelines, it's best to contact the receiving financial institution directly.

Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP)

Should I get Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP)?

You should strongly consider GAP insurance if you made, or will be making, a down payment of 25 percent or less on your vehicle. All Alliant vehicle loan types are eligible for GAP.

How do I apply for Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP)?

You can apply for GAP insurance after your loan application is approved.

What vehicles qualify for Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP)?

The following vehicles are covered under the GAP insurance program: new and used automobiles, light trucks not exceeding one ton capacity, boats, travel trailers, motor homes, ATVs, and watercraft.

Home Equity Loans

How do I choose between the different home equity loan products?

Each home equity loan product has specific advantages. A home equity line of credit (HELOC) gives you the flexibility to use the funds on an "as-needed" basis. On the other hand, a home equity loan gives you a one-time draw that is especially useful for a single large purchase. Consult with an Alliant Loan Consultant by calling us at 800-328-1935 to find the loan that's right for your situation.

How much equity do I need in my home to take out an Alliant Home Equity Loan or HELOC?

The amount of equity you currently have in your home will determine the Home Equity Loan value or Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) limit. Consult with an Alliant Loan Consultant by calling us at 800-328-1935 to get an estimate of your loan value amount or home equity credit limit.

What situations would an Alliant Interest-Only Home Equity Line of Credit be good for?

An Interest-Only Home Equity Line of Credit may be right for you if:

  • Your property is experiencing high value appreciation
  • You're self-employed or have variable income
  • You expect your earnings to increase significantly in a few years
  • You know you'll be moving soon and want to use the equity in your home
Are there any fees associated with my Home Equity loan?

Alliant doesn't charge application fees for most home equity loans, and doesn't charge origination or servicing fees. Our practice of no-or-low-fees for our services is another way – in addition to our great rates – we look out for the best interests of our members every day.

Loan Application

How fast can I be approved for a vehicle loan? Will funds be available the same day?

In many cases, your funds will be available the same day you apply. We understand that sometimes the vehicle-buying process is urgent, so our Alliant Loan Consultants are trained to help you expedite the loan application process and fund your loan quickly.

Can I pay off my loan quicker than the payment schedule?

Absolutely. At Alliant, there are no prepayment penalties for paying off your loan faster than your payment schedule. In fact, it's a great way to save on interest over the long run.

My loan application status is pending, what does that mean?

Pending often means that we could not automatically confirm some information submitted in your loan application (such as your mailing address) and we may need you to submit additional information before approving your loan application request. If you received an email or phone call from us requesting additional information, or have questions about your loan application status, please contact us at 800-328-1935 (24/7).

What income information do I need to apply?

You will need to provide the amount and source of your income (monthly or annual) during your loan application.

What information do I need to share about the car I am financing?

We will ask for the year, make, model, and trim level – or just the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) – of the vehicle you are looking to purchase. If you do not yet have this information, that's OK. You can still apply for a car loan, but we'll eventually need this information before your loan can be finalized.

How do I know if my loan application has been received?

You will see a screen confirming that your loan application has been received after it has been submitted.

How will I receive my Alliant loan documentation?

You have a few options, including providing an electronic signature using DocuSign, or having physical documents sent to you via FedEx.

Does Alliant do a hard credit check for loan applicants?

Yes. When reviewing an applicant's loan application, Alliant conducts a "hard" credit check.

Do I have to become a member to apply for a loan?

As a non-member, you can apply for an Alliant loan, but after the loan is approved, you will need to become a member before the loan can be funded.

Can I make my loan payments online?

Absolutely! If you have an Alliant checking or savings account, you can seamlessly manage all of your monthly loan payments through Alliant Bill Pay.

Where can I find information on current loan rates?

We're continuously updating our loan rates to make sure we're providing great rates to our members. To view our current rates, visit our "Rates" page.

How long will it take for my loan to be finalized?

The time required for a loan to be processed, decisioned, and paid out varies depending on the type of loan, the availability of documentation, and other factors. Most credit card and auto loans are completed in one business day. However, every loan application is unique, and your loan application may take longer.

Is there a minimum credit score required to be approved for an Alliant loan or credit card?

Alliant does not have a specific minimum credit score required to consider you for a loan or credit card. We consider multiple factors when reviewing loan and credit card applications.

What interest rate do you charge for loans?

All loan rates are published on the "Rates" page of our website. Please note that the rate offered to you may vary depending on factors including your credit score.

What credit bureau does Alliant use during the loan approval process?

The majority of Alliant's loan applications are processed using credit reports from Transunion, but any of the three major credit bureaus may be used to process your loan application.

Will I have to pay a loan application fee?

No. Alliant does not charge fees for its loan applications. However, you may incur fees if you opt to request expedited distribution of credit cards, loan documents, or checks. Some home equity loans may require an appraisal/inspection, which would need to be done at an additional cost.

How long is my preapproval good for?

The preapproval loan documents you receive will tell you when your preapproval offer expires. Generally, auto and credit card preapprovals are in effect for 30 days, and home equity loans are in effect for 60 days.
